That Shaped Me

2015-2019

Education

From a very young age I always had a great passion for design. My parents recognized this interest and enrolled me in design classes at the South Dakota Institute of Design and Technology. It was there that I learned basic skills including sewing, using a scale ruler, measuring with accuracy, creating design boards and 3-D elevations, and illustrating my ideas through drawings. My experience at SDIT fueled my passion for design.

Inspiration

I was selected to sing in a worldwide auditioned honor choir through the Honor Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. This life-changing experience allowed me to travel to New York City and perform on a world-renowned stage. I was left inspired and eager to continue exploring personal growth and development.

Ambition

As a freshman in high school, I joined the organization Family, Career and Community Leaders of America; a youth organization focused on providing youth the opportunity for career preparation and the chance to develop leadership skills. Using my knowledge of design, I competed in the STAR Event Illustrated Talk. My presentation revolved around the idea of the importance of the home and how interior design plays an integral role in creating that feeling. My entry ended up placing first in the state championship and my advancement to nationals resulted in a gold medal. My early success in the organization aspired to my competitive spirit, superior work ethic and drive, and my zeal for volunteer work.

Resilience

I joined my high school tennis team in 7th grade and made varsity my freshman through senior year. In the offseason, I continued to refine my skills and play tournaments year-round. My most outstanding achievements consist of making the all-tournament team, academic all-state, placing 2nd at flight one doubles, 3rd at flight two singles, and winning the Metro Conference in the class AA. Tennis presented great obstacles over the years that allowed me to learn the importance of perseverance, and to never let the fear of failure deter you from your dreams.

Leadership

The organization Family, Career and Community Leaders of America not only provides members the opportunity to compete in career development events but also to run for leadership positions. At the local level, I served as my chapter’s 2019-20 Secretary, 2020-21 Vice-President, and 2021-22 President. I decided to embark on a significant leadership journey my junior year running for region and state office. From 2021-22 I served as the SD FCCLA Region VI President and State 1st Vice President. This role required me to present and plan workshops and speeches for regional, state, and national conferences. I was tasked to advocate and recruit for FCCLA through social media, newsletters, magazines, and in everyday life. Some of my other responsibilities included planning, implementing, and evaluating service projects and activities within the organization. This wonderful organization opened many doors for me and I continue to use the skills I developed during my time in the organization to lead an ambitious life.

Performance

The National FFA Organization is a youth organization that prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. As a member, I competed in the following competitive events: Agriculture Communications, Extemporaneous Speaking, Floriculture, and Job Interview. I also had the opportunity to sing in the National FFA Chorus and serve as my chapter's 2021-22 Student Advisor. While at the National Conference, I sang in front of audiences of over 50,000 during a featured solo.

Volunteer Work

To fulfill my National Honor Society leadership and character pillars, I became a pen pal with a local elementary school class. I sent and received letters monthly, and I visited/volunteered in the classroom a minimum of once a month. The relationships I developed within the classroom taught me the value of supporting our youth and how simply being there for them can make a difference in their lives.

The Next Chapter

After attending Iowa State University and graduating with a BFA in graphic design, I plan to pursue a career in college athletics, focusing on marketing and branding. My goal is to apply my creative and design expertise to enhance the visibility, engagement, and overall experience of collegiate sports programs. By blending my passion for design with my love of athletics, I hope to contribute to the development of dynamic visual identities and campaigns that inspire athletes, fans, and communities.
